The flag of Costa Rica derives meanings from each of the colours in it which are supposed to represent certain emotions or states and human characteristics or traits related to them. The colours are the same as the French flag from which it was inspired but run horizontally in a pattern of blue-white-red-white-blue stripes and in the proportion of 1:1:2:1:1. The red is twice the size of the other individual stripes.
The colour blue is supposed to symbolize the sky and the concepts of opportunities, perseverance, intellectual thinking, infinity and eternity and spiritual goals. The colour white symbolizes peace along with beauty, happiness, initiative and wisdom while the red symbolizes the blood of the martyrs in the cause of freedom and the warmth of the people of Costa Rica.
