Stages of play

Solitary play- This is where the child plays only on their own and does not interact with any other children, this normally occurs when a child is around the age of 0-2 years old. All through a persons life they will have to learn how to do things on their own, but for a Childs first couple of years, they do not do anything else. Adults may thinks that they are playing with the child, but they are really only assisting them in how to do things or helping them to do things, the child will not see this through play because at that age they are unable to co-operate. The child is not interested in playing with other because they are ego-centric. Ego-centric is where a person is not able to see a point through another persons perspective. When a child is at the stage where they only play solitarily, they have certain toys which are deigned for this type of play, these are things such as shape sorter, activity gym, rattles, books with textures to them. Things fixed to pram or highchair. With the shape sorter, they learn how they need to be able to have the correct shape to fit in the correct hole.

Solitary play means playing without any regard for those around oneself. This kind of behaviour is frequently observed in young children where they are engrossed in their own toys and do not have any interest in other kids.

It is the earliest form of playing. The next stage is the Onlooker stage. In this level the child will start observing the other kids around them. Occasionally the child may also talk to others and often will modify their own play after watching others. Experts observe that children in this stage appear to be passive but are very alert.
The next stage is the Parallel Play stage where the child plays with the same toys as others but is not necessarily playing with them.
Associative play is next. In this stage the kid will engage in play together but in a loosely organized manner.
Last comes the Cooperative Play stage wherein children accept their designated role in the play and acknowledge their dependence on others to achieve the goals of the game.
