The traditional prayers prayed before and after meals by Catholics and other Christians have often been replaced by spontaneous prayer. Below you will find these prayers in the Latin version used by the church prior to Vatican II, which granted the use of native language throughout the world.
Prayer Before Meals
Benedicite. Benedic, Domine, nos et haec tua dona quae de tua largitate sumus sumpturi, Per Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.
Prayer After Meals
Agimus tibi gratias, omnipotens Deus, pro universis beneficiis tuis; qui vivis et regnas in saecula saeculorum. Amen
The following prayer for the Souls in Purgatory was often added after the above prayer.
Fidelium animae per misericodiam Dei requiescant in pace. Amen
The Our Father was a popular prayer in some homes.
Pater Noster, qui es in caelis: sanctificetur nomen tuum; adveniat renum tuum; fiat voluntas tua, sicut in caelo et in terra. Panem nostrum quotidianum da nobis hodie: et dimitte nobis debita nostra, sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris: et ne nos induca in tentationem: sed libera nos a malo. Amen
