Retarded was used in my childhood.....my kid laughs now when I say it cause she claims that it is not used. We used it to refer to kids who we had issues, problems or were impaired. It is not a good word and we should NOT say it. Kids who even had speech problems were called retarded. Today we know that they still have brains and can be taught to speak correctly in time..
We have a boy across the street who jerks and has a severe brain problem and that is what I would call retarded because even with teaching, he cannot learn. He normally lives in a halfway house for boys and comes home twice a month on the weekend.
