Why Do We Display Our Flag Inside Our Country?

There is always the danger that whenever a discussion comes up that mentions the flag, oath, pledge, the Book, church, society … someone would take offence and consider it as some sort of attack on one thing or another, thus stiffling free thinking and inquiry.
Yet I know of no other way to learn than to ask questions; and no better way to make a country stronger than to have more thinking citizens.
If you don't move using your head, someone will lead you by your nose.

My home town has recently acquired a large population of brazilians and portugese. A lot of them display their home country flags although they are now citizens. Its like now, I am living in Texas, but I don't like Texas. I still love Massachusetts. I love to watch the Red Sox and the Patriots. Someone at work asked me what football team I liked (football is huge in Texas) and I said "I LOVE the Patriots!" and of course this got them a little upset because they are Texas native. But they aren't mad at me, I am just different and from a different place. A little healthy rivalry never hurt anyone. I say if someone born and raised in another country has the right to be proud of their heritage seeing as though we are all from different places! That is what makes America great!

True. We let the “outsider” know of the groups we are affiliated with by displaying flags, sticker or wearing logo tee-shirts. These may be schools, company we work for, sport teams we support, clubs we are a member of, our ethnic origin, and even cars we drive. It is meant to say that WE are special, and YOU are not, implying that WE are smarter than YOU are.
But what are you saying to the next person wearing a similar Yankee tee-shirt in a Yankee Game at the Yankee Stadium? That's the question.

Thanks. But if we are inside America, aren't we supposed to be American already?

When I fly the American flag, it's partly a demonstration of loyalty to my country, that I'm proud of the things my flag represents. I honor those who have gone before us to secure and defend the rights I have as an American.

Your sentiments are certainly laudable. But who are you demonstrating them to? Are you suggesting that the rest of the country do not feel as you do?

There are certainly people in America who do not feel as I do. I see them on the news, breaking our laws, burning the flag (which is not illegal), disregarding authority, and so on.
I also do not have to demonstrate my sentiments to anyone. I know I feel a connection with others who fly the flag or demonstrate national loyalty. Just because I've displayed it where you can see it doesn't mean I feel a sense of superiority.
