Inflorescence is a particular arrangement of flowers on branch. A cluster of flowers is also called inflorescence. The word inflorescence has its origin in the Latin. The word is obtained from two words. The first part Latin 'in' means intensive. The second word is the Latin word flōrēscere which means 'to blossom'. Then, it was adapted by the Late Latin as īnflōrēscēns which was a past participle of īnflōrēscere. Īnflōrēscere means 'to begin to flower'. The new Latin modified it as īnflōrēscentia. The term 'inflorescent' is an adjective obtained from inflorescence.

There are two types of inflorescence or arrangements of the flowers. One is determinate and the other is indeterminate. When the flowers at the top of a common stem or inflorescence blossom first, it is called determinate inflorescence. When the flowers at the bottom of the stem or the ones inside a cluster blossom first, it is called indeterminate inflorescence.
