You did not mention if it was automatic or not. Most in that year are automatic. The valve guides of your transmission probably requires either replacement or in some cases can be rebuilt by a tranny shop. Not cheap. 400 to 700 minimum.

It could mean a couple of things . 1. Has the transmission ever been serviced and did they use the correct trans fluid when they refilled it ? There are shops that use multi-use trans fluids that are not compatible with all cars . 2 . Is there any check engine lights on , if so have the car checked for codes . Newer cars have electronic solenoids in the transmission that can act up or go out and cause shifting problems. If you have over 100,000 miles on your car and never had the transmission serviced  you might be inviting problems if you do depending on how it is driven. 3 . I don't think your car has one but some GM's have a modulator valve on the transmission and if it is bad or if there is a vacuum leak it can cause bad shifting .
Then again it could have a bad O-ring or seal inside the transmission letting fluid bypass .
Hope this is helpful , good luck.
