In Hebrew, Esther means "hidden", and is the Persian word for "star" Mordecai raised his cousin Hadassah, also known as Esther, as his own daughter; sent her to the palace upon learning of Persia's King Xerxes to find a beautiful bride, instructing her not to reveal her nationality or family background. She later won the king's favor, and became the Queen of Persia.

Esther is a very old name; it may even have started as a version of the name of the ancient Persian goddess Isthar. The name is certainly Persian in its origins, though it isn't clear whether it is a translation of the Hebrew word for heather, or based on the Persian stara, "star." We know the name from the Bible; in the Old Testamant, the Book of Esther tells the story of a Jewish woman captured by the Persians and married to their king, Ahasuerus. She used her influence to save many of her people from persecution.
The name Esther is used by both Jews and Christians; it was popular with the Puritans, who admired the Biblical Esther's humility and patience. It is uncommon today, although lately it has become better known again in Britain. This is because of a recent, hugely successful adaptation of Charles Dickens' novel "Bleak House," the heroine of which is called Esther Summerson.
There is a variant of Esther, Hester, which was common in the 18th and 19th century but is now almost unknown.

Esther is a female name. It has been used extensively in English, Jewish, Biblical and French. The other script that involves the mention of the name is Hebrew. The meaning of the name could be star that is regarded in the Persian Language. In Hebrew it could be from the Ishtar that was the name of the Persian Goddess.
In Hebrew Bible, Esther was a woman who was the queen of Xerxes I. she was also the heroine of the biblical Book of Esther. Because of Esther's benevolence, Persia had the Persian Jews living in it for 2700 years.
Esther also has links in mythology to the myrtle bush. The myrtle was associated with love, fidelity and a sprig was often worn by young women on their wedding day. The link with the stars and love make it a lovely name
Queen Victoria had myrtle in her wedding bouquet. My baby Grandaughter has Esther as a middle name and I have started to grow a bush of myrtle for her wedding day a long time in the future! If you know someone with the name it might be a nice thought to get them some myrtle. It's a difficult plant to grow and must be well cared for and hidden from frost. I managed to source some from the actual bush that was used for Queen Victoria! It's a lovely thought to give a sprig to any girl on her wedding day. The name Ester without the 'h' is usually of Jewish origin.
In the Old Testament in the Bible, Esther is a Jewish orphan girl who is looked after by her uncle Mordecai. The King of Persia wants to find a loyal wife after his wife refused to attend a banquet he'd provided (In those days wives had to obey each word the husband said), so he divorced with her. So he called all the girls (teens probably) and looked for one who was very beautiful and who would obey him. Of course, this was Esther. After she got married to him she was told by her uncle Mordecai that someone was plotting to kill all Jews. She then risked her life(complicated stuff, but I can't explain it properly out of the top of my head) to ask the King if he would help her, and then he made rules that Jews could protect themselves from any racist harm, then when he found out that the guy plotting to kill the Jews had been building really high gallows(his wife and children had all been in on this), the king ordered for the guy(I think he was called Herman) and his family to be hanged on the gallows he had built. Hope this was useful!! (L) I know this story quite well because I was named after this woman.
