These two devices are quite similar but do have some distinctly different features. See below for a breakdown of what both of these devices do to help people who are trying to find direction.

  • Clinometer device
The clinometer is known by many people as an inclinometer. The clinometer is similar to a compass, but is a really common device used by people who are used to trekking through forests and other natural land like this. Whereas a compass helps someone find their direction, a clinometer is a device that looks similar, but instead measures angles.

By using the device, you will be able to measure how steep a slope is. This is often considered useful when you are trekking as you can known what to expect as you are walking and you will be able to judge whether or not traveling a certain way during your trek will be worth the effort.

  • Compass
A compass is distinctly different. There is one major difference between these two devices, and five differences don't really need to be named. The fact is, a compass is distinctly different in that, even though it may look like a clinometer, it performs a completely different task.

A compass is able to use the magnetic force that surrounds the earth to be able to provide direction when you're in something like a forest. The compass will always point north, meaning that you can always work out which way you need to head when you are lost in the woods or other difficult place.
