The word expiration is used mostly in the United States of America and it is simply a synonymous word for expiry.

The word describes a certain period for which a document is valid and when the expiration of the document comes it is no longer valid and the text mentioned in the document can not be binding on anybody. The following two statements can better illustrate the term in context: 1) The expiration of a contract forces you to renew it. 2) The license must be renewed on its expiration.

The word expiration and many other words of this kind has one root and that is expire which conveys the idea of something finished. This word is most often used when somebody dies or his period of authority comes to an end. You can use the word as used in the following sentence: His term of office expires in the month of June.
