I think it means caring , good willed she would give the shirt off her back to anyone who needs it and even if they are higher in life than she is. Doris is a beautiful women, but will have a rough start, but as her faith grows later on in life in what she believes in her life will shape up.Doris is loving and tries to be fair, but is a bit of a pushover but later in life after many life lessons she Will learn to stand up for what she believes in.

This name was very rare until the late 19th century. It grew steadily in popularity from then on, probably reaching its peak in the 1950s due to the fame of actress Doris Day. It has now become very rare again.

In origin it is classical Greek and means "Dorian woman." The Dorians were an ancient Greek tribe; they had a legend that their founder was called Doros. This legend may have arisen because of the similarity of this name to the Greek word doron, "gift." In mythology, Doris was a sea goddess; she was the consort of the god Nereus and the mother of a huge family of sea nymphs.

Nowadays we don't usually think of this name as having glamour; yet tastes change so fast that in the 1970 film "The Owl and the Pussycat" Barbra Streisand played an ambitious prostitute who adopts the name Doris because she thinks it gives her a classy, mysterious air.
