A characteristic is a kind of a salient feature that serves as a distinguishing factor for a human or any substance. If something is characteristic of or to someone, it goes to say that it is unique to that person. For example, "I could hear my uncle's characteristic booming laugh right from the driveway". It becomes a sort of trademark for a person.

A characteristic in an individual is a means to tell one apart from another, in a way that the person will be described and recognised. A characteristic feature of the person is usually one that stands out among his other traits.

In the field of mathematics, a characteristic is the fundamental component of a logarithm. For example, the characteristic of the logarithm 7.3265 is 7. It is basically the numeral that denotes where the decimal is situated.
