If you are "trimming your wicks" you are keeping your lamp bright and burning, waiting through the night for someone to return....in this case Jesus. I don't think "virgins" had much to do with the reference besides the fact that they may be more focused on waiting for someone, anyone, than, say, a married person, or a mother with children would be.
A married person would, naturally, wait for her husband to return and blow out her candle, as would a lady with a family.
Candles and wicks were a light source for people in those times. If you trim your wick, you can reserve the light source of your candle/wax.
I just wondered the same exact thing.....and thought about it.... I am an English graduate, which, by no means, gives me the answer. But this verse does take some pondering....
