If you are "trimming your wicks" you are keeping your lamp bright and burning, waiting through the night for someone to return....in this case Jesus. I don't think "virgins" had much to do with the reference besides the fact that they may be more focused on waiting for someone, anyone, than, say, a married person, or a mother with children would be.
A married person would, naturally, wait for her husband to return and blow out her candle, as would a lady with a family.
Candles and wicks were a light source for people in those times. If you trim your wick, you can reserve the light source of your candle/wax.
I just wondered the same exact thing.....and thought about it.... I am an English graduate, which, by no means, gives me the answer. But this verse does take some pondering....

It was a verse in a Johnny Cash song, "The Virgins were all trimming their wicks." I believe that may have elicited the question.

It comes from the Bible, the New Testament, when Jesus is talking about the wise and foolish virgins getting ready for the bridegroom and is a metaphor for those who are preparing for Christ.

Does the phrase trimming their wick mean they are making the lamp brighter (lighting the world so to speak/showing others what they have missed)or putting out the flame in the lamp making the lamp last longer(leaving the undecided/unwise behind)?
