Collage is a type of art medium in which objects are glued or attached in some other way to a piece of paper or board to create an image.

Collage can be made using coloured paper, images from newspapers and magazines, bottle caps, coins, stamps - the possibilities are endless!

An interesting aspect of collage is that it can recycle discarded objects. The old magazines that your gran was about to throw out can be cut and pasted into your collage. Once you get started, you'll look all sorts of things as possible collage material.

Another enjoyable aspect of collage is that it combines objects in unexpected ways. For instance, a portrait of Abraham Lincoln could be constructed entirely out of coins.

Collage also serves to loosen up your creativity. It is sometimes not as permanent as a medium like oil painting. Collage can be easily re-arranged. Therefore, it invites a sense of play. This doesn't mean that the medium is not for the serious artist. Artists like Duchamp and Picasso used collage.
