When I was in elementary school, my teachers told me to remember that the principal (the head or leader of the school) was a "pal" and ended with those letters. Spell the word the other way when you are referring to a rule or belief.

The Word " Principle" refers to some rule maintained by an individual

ex : I wont do sex before marriage, this is against my principle.

Another word " Principal" means "Head" , "Superior", Leader , who have capability to handle.
Ex : He is the principal of our college.

The word...principle is used when one is referring to something such as a rule or a standard.

Example: The principle reason I fired him, was because he lied on his application.

The word ...principal however, is used to refer to something that is most important, or primary.

Example: I changed my mind for many reasons, but having no money, was the principal reason.
