Misandry is the term used for the hatred of men. The term originates from the Greek words misos (hatred) and andr (man).
The definition of misandry simply means 'a hatred of men', but is not specific to who it applies to (although it is usually used to refer to women who hate men).
Women who hate men
A person who hates men is known as a 'misandrist'.
The use of this term is attributed to the latter half of the twentieth century, and is widely thought to have been coined to describe the sentiments of the feminist movement in the United States during the 1970s.
The opposite (or antonym) of the word is 'philandry' which is used to describe an affection or fondness for men.
It's important not to get the word mixed up with the similar term 'philanderer' which actually means to engage in an extra-marital sexual affair.
The meaning of misandry
The term misandry can also apply to men who hate other men, although its use is more common to describe women who resent or hate men.
One sociological criticism of the term is that it was originally created to give the feminist movement a negative spin, by implying that feminism was somehow linked to misandry.
Misandry is often used as a parallel of misogyny, although that too draws criticism because misogyny is recognized as a more serious sociological problem.
