Prophylactic means preventive. This term is commonly used in the medicinal terminology. It indicates something that prevents or protects against injury or illness. Thus it is a procedure or a medicine that is used to stop ailments. Therefore it indicates a preventive therapy or an agent with the capability to ward of diseases. It may be a drug, vaccine, regimen, or device which has been designed with the purpose of providing protection against a disorder or ailment.

Hence it refers to something administered to prevent the development of a problem such as antibiotics given to prevent the possibility of an infection. Thus prophylactic things are used before illness develop, either being administered to large numbers of people in order to prevent infection, or in some cases to people who have already been susceptible to a disease but have not yet become ill.
