IMS is the abbreviation for Information Management System. This system was created a long time back by computer giant IBM as a hierarchical DBMS for IBM mainframes. It saw a wide usage under MVS during the course of the 1970s and is utilised till today under z/OS.
IMS DataBase (IMS/DB) is the database part that is used at the back end. IMS/Transaction Manager (IMS/TM) is used for the purpose of web interaction at the front end.
IMS/TM performs every transaction in its own address space and enables tuning that is more precise and accurate than CICS, which performs all exchanges in an area.
IMS/TM is also utilised to gain access to DB2 databases. IMS databases can be accessed through most Java applications.
