The actual meaning of the word Cuneiform is "wedge shaped". It comes from the Latin word "cuneus" meaning wedge.

Cuneiform refers to a type of script, a form of character types in use in the ancient forms of Sumerian, Akkadian, Persian, Assyrian and Babylonian scripts.
In medical terms it refers to a particular wedge kind of shape commonly seen in cartilages and bones.

The cuneiform script existed till the 1st century AD and can be traced back to the 30th century BC when it consisted of mostly of a system of pictographs. In its early stages of development it was written using blunt reeds on tablets made of clay. The name cuneiform (wedge shaped) comes from the fact that the shapes left on the clay tablets were shaped like wedges.
