The origin of the name manganese is the Greek word magnes. Mineral manganese dioxide was discovered in ancient times in the land of Magnesia, which is in modern-day Greece. It was used to decolorize glass. In the 16th century, glassmakers corrupted the name into the form manganesum, and the metal purified from the ore became known as manganese.
