It means kind of along the same lines as 'you snooze, you loose'. It means that if you do it now, you'll do better than if you do it at the last minute. For example, if a bird went out worm hunting earlier than the other birds, he would be the first, and maybe even the only, one to get a worm.

Success comes to those who prepare well and put in effort.
"the early bird gets the worm" means that you should not procrastinate because life will not wait for you.
This proverb is used to tell you to act early or right now to be successful. If someone says, "The early bird catches the worm," he/she means that if you do something early or before anyone else, you will have an advantage and be successful.

Well birds like to eat worms, so let's just say that there is a big juicy worm crawling around in the grass one morning. The bird who get's to the worm first, is going to get to eat it.
SO the saying is just another way of saying 'who ever gets in first'
