Magnesium is the eighth most copious element and makes up around 2% of the Earth's surface by weight. It is also the third most copious element dissolved in seawater. Magnesium ion is vital to all living cells. Elemental magnesium is a quiet strong, silvery-white, light-weight metal.

It gets somewhat tarnished when exposed to air. Magnesium complexes are characteristically white crystals.

The term magnesium comes originates from the Greek term for a region in Thessaly known as Magnesia. Lack of magnesium in humans was initially illustrated in the year 1934.
