MI5 is the name of the Security Service of the UK. The Security Service is a division of the Secret Service Bureau. It was established in 1909. MI5 means 'Military Intelligence [Department] 5.' It also means 'Military Intelligence section 5'.

The MI5 was set up mainly with the purpose of protecting the United Kingdom from terrorism and to fight against serious crime. It is totally related with the internal security. MI5 was the Service's official name only for thirteen years.

MI6 is the name of Secret Intelligence Service. It is also known by the name 'SIS'. It was established in 1909. The Foreign Section of the Secret Service Bureau .MI6 means 'Military Intelligence [Department] 6.' It also means 'Military Intelligence section 6'.

It is responsible for gathering intelligence overseas on behalf of the British Government. It is totally related with the external security. It is not a government department. It has no powers of arrest.

There were total 19 departments within the Directorate of Military Intelligence. It means there were total 19 MI sections such as MI1, MI2, MI3 upto MI19.The responsibilities of these sections were discontinued except MI5 and MI6.
