Sorry a High RDW is actually the width or size of the red blood cells. It is not a low red blood cell count. If your HCT(hematocrit) and HGB(hemoglobin) are low and your RDW is high this means that there is a sparse amount of oxygenated blood in your system. Your red blood cells actually get bigger to collect more oxygen to carry around your system. This problem can be associated with anemia of several types or something a bit more serious such as a GI bleed. You need to follow up with your doctor ASAP. Don't just talk to a nurse a leave a message...make an appointment and ask lots of questions until you fully understand what is going on. Good luck!!!

You have a low red blood count.  This could mean anemia or maybe something else.  Call your doctor and speak to his nurse.  They should have explained this to you and prescribe treatment if needed.

I am deficient in B12 and the saturation of iron in my blood as well as my hemoglobin continue to drop in spite of injections and massive amounts of iron. They are testing for a variety of forms of anemia and haven't yet discovered any answers. It's the something else that scares me.
