The name Dalton means "Town in the Valley" in old English. A famous person with this name is John Dalton, who was an English chemist and physicist who put forward the theory of existence of atoms. He has also done extensive research on color blindness.
Around the year 1790 he thought of studying law or medicine. His family was not happy with his decision to take up law and medicine so he stayed back at the Kendal unit. In the year 1973 he shifted to the Manchester Academy with the help of John Gough who was a blind philosopher and from whom he learnt most of his scientific knowledge. He was awarded the position of a Mathematics and Philosophy teacher at the Manchester Academy. He stayed at that position until the college was shifted to York in the year 1803.
