Authority is the power that one has over someone. This power is legitimate and the person who has this power can enforce laws, demand obedience and even punish. Someone who has authoritative power is responsible for the people that he controls and is also accountable for his actions. Responsibility and accountability are two things which are important with a position of authority.

On the other hand Responsibility refers to a duty or obligation you have towards someone to perform a task. It is the authoritative power which holds you responsible for something.
