Hallmarks are identification on the silver in order to determine the 'who', 'where', when' of the silversmiths. There are around 4 to 5 hallmarks present on every piece of silver.  One there is a Lion Passant, City Mark, Date Letter, Duty Markand and last is the Maker's Mark.

The first one is an identification of true English Sterling Silver. The second identification of City Mark is the identity for London, which is the main place for silver in England. The Date Letter tells you in which year the particular item was made. In London, it has letters from A to you, excluding J in which there are 20 different letter used in various font sizes. The Duty Mark existed only between the years 1784 and 1890, so if you have a duty mark on your silver then your particular item is of that period. The very significant mark is the Maker's Mark, which helps you identify the silversmith of your silver.
