Personification is when you give life like characteristics to things that aren't alive. Example: The chair breathed heavily. (chairs cannot actually breath, that's why its personification). Symbolism is using indirect suggestions to express your emotions or an idea. Think of metaphors. SOOO instead of giving the inanimate objects characteristics, you're now giving them to emotions or ideas.
