The pancreas is an internal organ that sits close to the stomach. It has many functions, one of which is to produce enzymes that are then distributed into the stomach and small intestine. These enzymes break down the food that we eat so that it can be digested. It also produces insulin and glycogen which are pushed out into the bloodstream so that your blood sugar levels are stable.

The most common cause of lumps or enlargement of the pancreas is pancreatitis. This is an infection of the pancreas and is recurring in most sufferers. This can be hereditary or can be brought on by cystic fibrosis, high levels of fat in the blood and even by some medicines. Pancreatitis can be fatal if there are any complications so do see a doctor if you have any sever pain in your abdomen and suffer from vomiting or nausea.

Pancreatic cancer is also a common cause of an inflamed pancreas. This form of cancer can be caused by many different things. Some of which are;
• Smoking
• Obesity
• Poor diet
• Diabetes

You should make sure that you see a doctor if you have any form of illness especially if you have any lumps or pain within your abdomen. Infections within your internal organs can be a sign of other, more serious health issues and you should always go and get them looked at. Your doctor may want to send you for a scan if you have an inflamed pancreas or have found a lump. This is the best way to determine where the swelling is and also what may be causing it and if there are any other lumps nearby that are not yet causing you any issues.
