A character reference letter is legally required as part of the process of application for legal immigration into the United States of America. This letter can be written for a friend of family member and must show why that person should be allowed in, i.e. What an asset they will be. This letter does not have to be long, one page will suffice.

Below are some steps on how to write a professional looking business letter that will help your friend or family member as much as possible during the difficult immigration process.

  • Step one. Your character reference letter should be laid out like a business letter. Your personal address and that day's date should be type in the top right hand corner of the page. On the left hand side of the page below your address, you should type the full address of the state department that is handling the immigration application.
  • Step two. Your letter should be 'Dear Sir or Madam'.
  • Step three. You should then proceed to introduce yourself and explain your relationship with the applicant.
  • Step four. The next step is to describe your friend positively and portray them in a good light. You should take care to make sure that this section does not sound over the top but also describe them well.
  • Step five. Back up the points that you have made in the previous step with specific examples. Make sure that these are 100 per cent genuine examples.
  • Step six. Finish off your letter with a brief closing statement and end by thanking them for their time. You can also leave your telephone number or email address so that they can contact you should they need to ask you anything else. Sign the letter and then type your name underneath you signature.
