The current interpretation of the colours on the Colombian flag states that the yellow represents all of the gold found in the Columbian land, the blue represents the seas on Colombia’s shores and that the red represents the blood spilled on the battlegrounds by heroes who gained Colombia’s freedom. There are other variations on the interpretation of the colours of the flag. Another is that yellow represents the sun and land of the people, blue represents the water that holds up the people and red represents the blood shed by the people who fought for the independence of Columbia.

The common yellow, blue and red flag of Colombia was originally created by Francisco de Miranda. Miranda stated that there were two sources of inspiration for his flag, the theory of primary colours given to him by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and the yellow, blue and red standard of the Burger Guard in Hamburg. He is quoted as explaining his influence from Goethe as,  He proved to me why yellow is the most warm, noble and closest to white light; why blue is that mix of excitement and serenity, a distance that evokes shadows; and why red is the exaltation of yellow and blue, the synthesis, the vanishing of light into shadow.”

A military man, Miranda submitted, be it unsuccessfully, a plan for an army to liberate Spanish America. For this plan he requested the material for 10 flags of red, yellow and blue. It is one of the stories that defines this great nation’s history even today.

The flag of the country of Colombia consist of three bands of yellow, blue, and red. It was first adopted as the Colombian flag in 1861.

Two of the three stripes on the Colombian flag are the same size. The yellow (and top most) stripe is larger than the red and blue stripe. The yellow strip represents the Colombian land. Colombia is a large country in South America, so they decided to make the yellow stripe larger than the other two stripes.

The blue strip represents the oceans that surround and border Colombia. Colombia is the only country in South America to be bordered by both the Pacific and the Atlantic Oceans. It also has a small border with the Caribbean Ocean as well.

Finally, the red stripe represents the blood that was shed by the patriots for the freedom of Colombia. To this very day, Colombians still struggle for their freedom, but the ones who have died so that Colombia can be a free country are very well-respected and never forgotten.
