The word proscenium is a misunderstood term. Most performers and designers incorrectly refer to the proscenium when they actually mean the proscenium arch. The proscenium is defined as that part of the stage which is between the curtain and the orchestra pit, and the architectural arch which encloses the curtain is known as the proscenium arch.

It is the traditional type of stage that resembles a picture frame with a curtain. It is often abbreviated by theatre personalities as the pros (and not the pross, which is the correct pronunciation). The proscenium arch separates the traditional picture-window stage from the auditorium. The audience watches the performance from a single perspective, which is also known as the fourth wall perspective.

The proscenium is defined as a type of stage in which the actors play opposite the audience. The performers and the audience are separated from each other by the proscenium. In most high schools, the auditoriums are prosceniums.
