Sonoma is a word that is used mainly to name a place and the meaning that the name of the place conveys is 'Valley of the moon' or sometimes 'many moons' also. The legend about the name of the place is that it is believed that the moon nestled here and hence the name.

This translation for the name of the place is being popular since the year 1850 and when the novel 'The Valley of the Moon' published in the year 1913 it became more popular.

But some people link the meaning of the word with another meaning and they say that the word conveys the idea of 'earth village'. This meaning also gets acceptance because 'noma' is another word for village and the word 'tso' is used to convey the idea of earth.
