Marley is a masculine as well as a feminine first name. It is mainly used in English. It is pronounced Mahr-lee.

It is a name which is made up of two syllables. In the English language, the two syllables that make up the name Marley are the syllable Mahr and the syllable lee. In the English language, more emphasis is put on the first of the two syllables that make up the name Marley that is the syllable Mahr.

The name Marley is basically a last name. In fact, the first name Marley has basically been derived from a last name which, in turn, has been derived from the name of a place which means pleasant wood in Old English. One of the most famous personalities who bore the last name Marley was the musician Bob Marley, who was a native of the Caribbean island of Jamaica in the West Indies.

Marley is defined as sleet or soil that is related to marl in the Yorkshire area. It is also the name of three places. The first one is a quaint hamlet in Deal in Kent in England. Also in Kent is Marley which is located in the civil parish of Harrietsham which is situated in the Maidstone district. Lastly in Maryland in the USA, Marley station is a popular shopping mall in Glen Burnie in Anne Arundel County.

Marley is also a common surname. The most famous person with the surname Marley is of course the internationally acclaimed reggae musician Bob Marley. He hailed from Jamaica and was a gifted songwriter, singer and guitarist. He popularized reggae music which heretofore was popular only in its native Jamaica. He was a staunch Rastafarian and is hailed by many as a prophet of this religion. He died in 1982.
