The word Odessa is supposed to be a name of girls besides several other things. As a name it is derived from the Greek. It is believed to be a female variant of the Greek "Odysseus". Odysseus in Greek means "angry man". There are several places named Odessa as well. It was originally however, as a name for a place, given to the Russian port city of Odessa. Odessa is believed to have been named after "The Odyssey".

Other places called Odessa, besides the original Odessa now in Ukraine, include Odessa in Delaware, in Florida, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Texas, New York and Washington. There is even a Lake Odessa and an Odessa township in Michigan. In Canada there is an Odessa in Ontario and another in Saskatchewan. There is one Nova Odessa in Ukraine and another in Brazil.
