Strain refers to an injury. It is caused due to tearing of muscle fibres as a result of over stretching. Thus strains are also known as pulled muscles. It is similar to a sprain. The symptoms of a strain are pain, stiffness, swelling, inflammation and bruising around the muscle that is strained. It can happen to people of any sex and age employed in any profession in contrast to the popular belief that it is something that happens to only athletes.

People can get a strain even while performing simple actions like putting on a dress or moving something from one place to another. Strains are treated with the help of R.I.C.E. which is an abbreviation of Rest-Ice-Compression-Elevation. This method helps to relieve pain stopping all activity through rest, icing and compression is applied to the area to stop swelling and inflammation, and elevation helps to keep the blood and fluids from pooling in the area of the strain.
