Dole in its most common usage is money that given by the state to unemployed people. It may also indicate a share of clothing or food that has been given to charity. It is also the name of a commune in France in the Jura Department.

A synonym for dole is unemployment benefits. In America it is called 'welfare'. In Britain it is called Jobseeker's Allowance. There are two different categories- contribution based and income based.
Dole in France was the former capital of Franche-Comté. However when the region was conquered by Louis XIV he transferred the Parlement to Besancon. Louis Pasteur the famous scientist was born in Dole and his home has been transformed into a museum.

La Dole is a mountain in Switzerland. The Dole Food Company is an American agricultural company. Prominent people with the surname dole include Bob Dole, James Dole, Elizabeth Dole, Vincent Dole, Sanford B. Dole and Mary Phylinda Dole.

On the dole means money that is given to unemployed people by the state. E.g. My uncle has been on the dole for nearly a year. To be honest, I don't think he'll ever work again.
