Sere could also be written as sear. The word sere has its origin in Old English and is obtained from the word sēar. Later, it was modified by the Middle English. Sere is an adjective and is used to describe something that is withered or dry. For example: sere grasslands. Here, describes the grasslands as arid or deficient in vegetation.

Sere is also used as a noun. Here, it refers to the stages in any ecological community. It lists down the sequence of the community succession in an area. These sere covers all stages from first community to the most recent community. Arid, bone-dry, moisture less, waterless are some of the words that could be used for sere. The expanded from of SERE is survival, evasion, resistance and escape.
