What exactly is a bishopric, and what do they do? How can you politely decline being part of the bishopric?

It's as hard to decline living in a bishopric as it is to decline living in the town of your choice. They're just there.

A bishopric (aka a "see") is the area that falls under the aegis of a bishop of the Anglican (Episcopalian) Church. It usually comprises several parishes.

Unemployed bishops who have been without a bishopric for an extended period gave rise to the phrase "long time no see".
