To comply, to be similar, to act in accordance or to adapt current modes and customs is to conform.

The most influential force that a society exerts on an individual is that of conformity.

Members of any society or group or nation that refuse to conform are always treated as deviants and rejected. Conformity helps form positive bonds between members and any deviant members who hold non-conformist views, weaken this group bond. In any fight for survival, conformity in any group is of great help since people have a natural instinct to be a part of groups and to fit in.

But conformity usually requires unthinking behaviour, and people with higher intelligence and greater self esteem sometimes have difficulties and resistance to this.

Conformity also inhabits innovation and individuality.
