The term 'Purple Heart' is used as a noun and the term is used for a medal that is given to a member of the armed forces in the US who is wounded while he was in the battle.

The medal is a heart shaped one and is kept within a gold border. It contains a profile of General George Washington who is responsible for the establishment of the medal. The medal was came into existence way back in the year 1782 but in later years it fell into disuse. But in the early years of the twentieth century it was revived again and now it is considered as one of the coveted medals in the US armed forces.

One of the criteria which decide that to whom the medal should be given is that it is given only to those who have been wounded after the fifth of April, 1917.
