Pensive is an adjective which is best defined as a temperament that is brooding. It is closely associated with a modicum of wistfulness and meditation. It may allude to a state where one is continually in a morbid or morose frame of mind. It is also occasionally used in connection with being rather despondent and thoughtful. A few examples are 'The actress was rather pensive despite her rather cheerful bubbly public image' or 'that painting puts me in a rather pensive frame of mind'.

The English word pensive is derived from the Latin words penser and pensare both of which means to ponder or deliberate upon.

Pensive is also the name of a legendary racehorse. Back in 1944 the chestnut coloured thoroughbred came exceedingly close to winning the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing. As things turned out though, he won the first two legs but lost the third.
