Polymer basically is an expression applied to illustrate the huge molecules comprising of a recurring structural units, or monomers, joined via covalent chemical bonds.

The word comes from the Greek terms polys which means many and meros which means parts. A vital characteristic which differentiates polymers from supplementary molecules is the repetition of many similar or matching molecular subunits in these chains. These subunits, the monomers, are minute molecules of short to reasonable molecular weight, and are connected to each other through a chemical reaction known as polymerisation.

Identical monomers are said to have a range of chemical substitutes. These dissimilarities among the monomers can have an effect on characteristics like solubility, flexibility and even its strengths. In proteins, these dissimilarities provide polymer with the capability to accept biologically-active conformation.
