Pollution is said to occur when the natural environment is in a rather undesirable state owing to harmful substances that lead to a contaminated environment. The act of polluting the area around oneself can either be intentional or unintentional. Pollution can be of various kinds, air, water, noise, light etc.

Air pollution is largely caused by the release of gaseous pollutants and chemicals in the air. This includes gases like CFC's (chlorofluorocarbons), carbon monoxide, ozone and smog. Water pollution can be cause due to improper disposals of various effluents into the sea or surface run off.

Noise pollution is in terms of the high intensity and high frequency sounds that can prove potentially damaging to organisms and the environment around them. Light pollution includes over lighting etc which is today becoming one of the prime problems in areas that are located near forest regions.

Smog is formed as nitrogen oxide and hydrocarbons react to the sunlight. Water pollution takes place through surface runoff and discharge to groundwater. A soil contamination takes place when chemicals are discharged by spill or underground storage tank.
