A microscope is a device or instrument that is used to magnify or enlarge the image or size of those objects which are small in size. It was the invention of the microscope that made the discovery of the cell possible. The word microscope comes from two Greek words, which means micron, which means small and scope, which means aim.

It is used to view those objects that are too tiny to be seen by the naked eye. The science of investigating small instruments using a microscope is known as microscopy. The term microscopic is the adjective form which is derived from the word microscope. It means minute or very small. Microscopic objects are those objects which are not easily visible with the naked eye and hence require a microscope to examine them. A microscope uses a combination of both concave and convex lenses to magnify the images of very small objects.
