Insignia is derived from the Latin word 'insigne', which means emblem or symbol. It is basically a symbol or token of any kind of individual that has power, status or office. It could even be considered as a symbol of any official government body or jurisdiction. It is also considered to be an emblem of any particular or general authority. Some of the very familiar examples are crowns, flags of that particular state or country, coat of arms, seals, ensigns, roundels, badges and cockades.

Usually in most countries any kind of misuse or destruction or even defacement of any symbol is considered to be an offence.
