Jair is the name of an ancient character. He was a man from Gilead. He was one of the people mentioned in the Book of Judges and he judged Israel for 22 long years after the death of Tola. He belonged to the family of Makir, the son of Menasseh. Jair himself was the son of Segub. He had thirty sons who in turn possessed thirty ass colts and thirty 'cities' in Gilead known as Havoth-Jair. Jair died and was buried in Kamon.

Today Jair is a popular Hebrew name for males. It means "my light" or "who diffuses light". Apart from the judge four other biblical characters too had the same name. Thus this name is very ancient in its origin.
