A loyalist is a "supporter, partisan or a disciple." A patriot is often said to be a loyalist person for his nation or state. A person who is loyal to an established government, political party, a supreme governing authority or a person in power is called as a loyalist. Such a person is a staunch supporter and it is understood that he or she will stand by his boss, organization or state, through thick and thin.

The word "loyalist" was used in reference to the American colonies, one third of who were loyal to Britain during the American Revolution. One uses the word "loyalist" more as a test of patriotism or support during a revolutionary change or a war. The term "loyalist" was first coined during the 1790s, in Irish politics to point to Protestants who contradicted the catholic emancipation and fought for greater amount of freedom for their country from Great Britain. In modern Northern Ireland, a loyalist is a unionist who has strong opinions about the political union between Northern Ireland and Great Britain.
