The word gulch is used to define a deep valley. It is shaped like the letter V of the English alphabet. A gulch is formed by the process of erosion. A gulch may contain a small stream or creek bed that has been dried. It is usually larger in size than a gully. Occasionally, the area of a gulch may get flooded due to flash floods. These flash floods may be caused because of a sudden intense downpour of rainfall.

In other words, the word gulch either refers to a small, steep valley which is usually occupied by a small stream or creek or a narrow gorge which has a stream running through it. In Canada, the word gulch is defined as a narrow, deep cove in Newfoundland and a narrow channel of salt water in the province of Nova Scotia. Gulch was also the name of a thoroughbred horse.
