The term Gunny is basically is a coarse fabric, derived from Goney. It is basically a strong coarse material generally made from jute. Jute basically is long, soft, shiny vegetable fibre which can be spun into coarse, sturdy threads.

Jute is obtained from the plants in the type Corchorus, family Malvaceae. Jute basically is one of the most economical natural fibres, and comes second only to cotton in quantity created and assortment of uses. Jute fibres are composed largely of the plant matter, cellulose and lignin.

It is hence a lingo-cellulosic fibre which is partly textile fiber and partly wood. Jute fibre is commonly referred as Hessian, jute fabrics are also known as Hessian cloth, where as jute sacks are known as gunny backs in quiet a few European states.
